For some Guests at our health and weight loss spa, there may be tax benefits available based on the fees you pay for our Healthy Lifestyle™ program.
A groundbreaking ruling in 2002 by the Internal Revenue Service allows Americans to deduct the cost of certain weight loss programs (including The Weight Loss Health Spa) as a medical expense. Taxpayers considered obese will be able to deduct any expenses over 7.5% of their adjusted gross income, with their spouse and dependents covered as well.
Although it varies according to height, obesity is defined as roughly 30+ pounds over what is considered a healthy weight. In the U.S., about one quarter, or 54 million, of adults meet the definition of obese.
Citing research from organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the IRS also described obesity as “medically accepted to be a disease in its own right.” Previously, obesity was only considered a precursor to conditions such as heart disease or high blood pressure.
Being overweight or obese can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and some types of cancer, among other illnesses. Obese individuals can also suffer from an attached social stigma, leading to isolation and depression. In America, it is estimated that approximately 300,000 unnecessary deaths can be attributed to obesity each year.
To be eligible for the deduction, taxpayers must participate in a weight loss program for medical reasons. The ruling applies only to those people who suffer from obesity, not to mildly overweight individuals looking to improve their appearance, general health or well-being. Diet foods, however, are not deductible since the IRS considers them to be substitutes for normal meals.
Although the IRS mentioned obesity and high blood pressure specifically, the deduction may be used for any illness that has been diagnosed by a physician.
Although this ruling doesn’t apply to every person who visits the Institute weight loss spa, for many guests it could represent a possible savings of up to several thousand dollars. Quite a tax break for improving the quality, as well as quantity, of your life. So, if you need another reason to encourage your to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle, this may be it.
