Fitness Instructor, Chris Varano works closely with H3’s LoseWell4 guests. The LoseWell4 program incorporates small groups in many aspects of fitness and mind/body classes. “Small group training looks and feels safer to new exercisers,” says Chris. She continues, “there are other people to relate to that are going through the same things you are and in similar physical shape.” This can differ from taking large group classes which cater to a wide variety of fitness levels and can leave the novice exerciser feeling left out or behind.
As you start to work out in a small group and build relationships, you want to see your friends succeed. “There is camaraderie in the small group, which can be a big motivator,” said Chris. Small group training gives you the opportunity to be working out with friends who support you, keep you on track for workouts and give you that push to continue even when things feel challenging.
Working out with groups can help keep you accountable. “It’s much easier to cancel a session with your trainer than to bail on your group when they’re counting on you to be there,” said Chris. If you are intimidated by the idea of a personal training session in which it is just you and the trainer, then having a group with you can help reduce nerves. “Some people don’t like all the attention of being one-on-one with someone. Having a small group spreads the attention to several people and can seem less intimidating,” said Chris.
