New Food Highlight: Dried Figs

Have you tried dried figs yet? This nutritional superfood is a great way to get all the fiber you need!

If you have not tried a fresh or dried fig, run to the store! Figs are sweet but not overpowering. The inside is full of small, edible seeds that make the eating experience something special. Fresh figs are going to be juicy, of course, compared to dried figs but both are beneficial to add to your dietary pattern.

Dried figs are rich in phenol antioxidants and nutrients, most notably fiber. According to the Journal of American College of Nutrition, intake of dried figs increases antioxidant capacity for four hours after consumption, reducing inflammation. Eating 5 figs provides you 5g of fiber, 18% of your daily value of 28 g/day. Fiber is beneficial for your gut and cardiovascular health.

Figs are great as snacks on their own or used to top salads. Dried figs can replace raisins on “ants on a log.” A good snack or breakfast is a banana smeared with peanut butter, made only from peanuts, and dotted with figs. Try new ways to eat figs! They just may become a staple in your pantry!
