There are hundreds of fitness and nutrition apps out there that choosing ones that will really help you achieve your weight loss goals can seem like an overwhelming task. We asked the Hilton Head Health experts in nutrition and fitness what extra tools they use to keep them on track with their fitness and nutrition. While simply downloading an app will not guarantee the results, these apps are great additional tools to keep you on track before or after or stays at Hilton Head Health.
1. Lose It
Chef Karla Williams, Executive Chef at H3 said she uses an app called Lose It. "I like to record my food intake every few months to ensure that my food intake is providing proper nutrition content. Once I build an “average” day I run on that template for a while," said Karla.
Another favorite for H3's renowned chef is the app Fooducate. "it scans bar codes to rates if it is a healthy food choice." This is a great tool to use for grocery shopping outings. "It’s great because it tells you why the food received the grade it does which helps educate for long-term success," explained Karla.
3. My Fitness Pal
Chris Verano, fitness instructor at H3 uses My Fitness Pal. This app is a great way to keep track of the calories you are taking in each day and then determine how many hours of physical exercise you should maintain to stay on track with your weight loss goals.
4. Gibbon App
Matt Barrack, fitness instructor at H3 uses a unique app that reflects his competitive coaching characteristics. "I do have one but it’s very unique." It’s the Gibbon app. Gibbon is a manufacturer of slacklines. A combination of tightrope and trampoline. Very challenging balance exercise. "The app is really great! Provides incremental challenges for every level, from first day to advanced," explained Matt. The app comes with instructional videos and when you upload a video of you performing a task correctly, you get points. And you can share them with other “slackers” around the world.
5. Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen
An easy to use app that does not track calories but tracks foods that promote health. If you eat a serving of the 12 food groups it lists, all you have to do is check mark that you completed it. For example one recommendation is to eat 2 servings of leafy greens per day. The app provides you with what a serving is and what types of leafy greens count, then if you eat it you can tick it off the list. It is user-friendly and it focuses on food rather than nutrients, something that we all can get overwhelmed with.
A good companion to this app is Dr. Greger’s New York Times best seller “How Not to Die”. It goes into more depth on why he recommends these foods for optimal health.
