Importance of Wellness Counseling

Erin Risius, MA, LPC, is the Wellness Counselor at Hilton Head Health (H3) and she has experienced first-hand the positive impact that individualized and small-group counseling can have on a guest as they are working towards a healthier and happier self. "This process of creating a healthier lifestyle is a mind and body experience," said Erin. 

 

When guests come to H3, the process of understanding what changes they need to make both physically and emotionally come into play. "Often, it's more than the "how-to" it's understanding what motivates behavior. With wellness counseling, that process of seeing someone like me, helps them understand what is going to help both while they are here at H3 and at home." 

 

Stress and relationship with food tend to be major issues that guests are struggling with when they come to Hilton Head Health. By participating in counseling sessions, Erin can work with the guest to better understand their behaviors and come up with manageable strategies that they can take home with them. Erin leads lecture series and classes on the relationship of food and motivation. 

 

In the LoseWell4 program, the wellness counseling sessions act as a way to help monitor each guest's progress and assure that they are safe and supported. The structure of the LoseWell4 program is to make sure that the guests are not over-doing it and the counseling sessions help counter-act any overwhelming feelings. "The counseling sessions become a touch point for the guest to feel less alone and a chance for them to speak with someone who is completely objective." 

 

Scheduling a counseling session at H3 is encouraged to fully gain the tools and resources they need to be successful in the long-term.  "The counseling sessions help guests create strategies to take home with them and to fully bridge the gap between insight, action, and self-care."
