Finding the Right Gym

Posted on Dec 27, 2017 by David Chesworth

Convenience: Start by making it seamless and convenient: Find a place that fits in nicely with your routine. For instance;

  • a gym that’s on your way to and from work
  • a gym near home
  • a gym near work
  • perhaps you start by hiring a trainer to come to your house

Try a few before committing: Like searching for a place to live, dedicate time to see if it is a good fit for you. The more serious you approach this from the beginning, the more likely you are to stick to it. A few things you can do:

  • Set up times with a few gyms to get tours
  • Start with a multiclass punch-card
  • Most gyms offer free trial classes, free personal training sessions, or sometimes even a 1-month free trial

Safety: Be sure to go somewhere that is credible and safe:

  • They have an emergency procedure in place
  • They have first aid and AED easily accessible
  • They have credible certifications that are either through or recognized by:
    • ACSM
    • ACSM
    • NSCA
    • NASM
    • ACE
    • AEA
    • Water Art
    • AFPA
    • AFAA
    • Balanced Body (Pilates)
    • Pilates Sports Center
    • Pilates by Pilates Body Mind
    • Registered Yoga Alliance
    • Crossfit Level 3
    • FMS Level 2
    • Gymnastics Bodies
