New Food Highlight: Dragon Fruit

Posted on Jul 04, 2018 by Hilton Head Health

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, is a beautiful tropical fruit with flesh that is sweet and a little crunchy. The taste is described as a cross between a kiwi and a pear. Grown in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Central and South America. The plant is actually a type of cactus!

Though it may look intimidating, hence the name, slicing and prepping this fruit is very easy. You can enjoy it in fruit salads, tasty drinks or desserts. It's also a great, healthy snack on its own. Given that it's low in calories, the high amount of fiber and Vitamin C make it a highly nutrient-dense fruit.

Dragon fruit also offers numerous other nutrients, including phosphorus, calcium and antioxidants. You can find dragon fruit in most grocery stores year-round, though the season peaks in summer and lasts into early autumn.

When it comes to buying dragon fruit from a grocery store or even in a special farmer's market, you want to look for bright pink skin. Leave any with dark spots or bruises. The fruit tastes best when it’s ripe and fresh. So before buying the fruit, try pressing it slightly with your fingertips. You want it to be slightly soft. If it's too soft, it may be overripe.
