Don’t Call It A Fat Farm: Hilton Head Health Celebrates 50 Years
Fifty years ago, in 1976, behavioral psychologist Dr. Peter Miller founded Hilton Head Health (commonly referred to as H3), as an alternative to “fat farms” and “fat camps.” H3 started as a four-week retreat operating out of Hilton Head Island’s regional hospital. Over the past several decades Hilton Head Health evolved into a wellness resort that includes programs on nutrition, movement, mindset, stress recovery and exercise.
“We’ve have been practicing the same core concept for 50 years, which is lifestyle change,” says Jill Boyd, Chief Operating Officer of Hilton Head Health. Back when Hilton Head Health opened, people were smoking, drinking and not focused on healthy eating. Dr Miller built a company based around teaching people that with lifestyle changes, they could live longer and better lives.
