October 3, 2022Registered Dietitian Says Shrimp Gets a Bad Rap, but There is Some Good News
Despite popular belief, shrimp can actually be quite healthy. Elizabeth Huggins from Hilton Head Health is here to explain why.

Anyone who loves shrimp knows that they are delicious! What some shrimp lovers may not know, however, is that shrimp gets a bad rap for being high in dietary cholesterol.
Elizabeth Huggins, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist who works at Hilton Head Health, shared some good news for shrimp lovers with Local Life SC: dietary cholesterol does not have a strong effect on our blood cholesterol levels.
Huggins notes that the best way to consider changes to your diet is by following serving suggestions and consulting with medical professionals. It’s worth noting that serving suggestions may or may not take into account the use of fatty cooking oils which might change how dietary cholesterol levels are measured. “From a nutrition standpoint, how your shrimp is prepared and what sides are served with your shrimp are what really counts,” says Huggins.
Shrimp is delicious, nutritious, and— contrary to popular belief—doesn’t have a strong effect on our blood cholesterol levels. So next time you’re looking for a healthy meal that’s also truly delicious, don’t be afraid to order the shrimp! Just be sure to consult your doctor or registered dietitian if you have any concerns about cholesterol.
