How to Master the Farmers’ Market

Going to the farmers’ market can be a bit overwhelming if you don’t have a game plan. So we asked registered dietitian and farmers’ market expert, Felicia Hackett to gives us some tips so that we can shop our local produce with confidence.

What to bring:

1. Bring a bag: Felicia Hackett at Farmer's Market

Bring a tote bag of some sort that can be used to place your fruits in veggies in. This is great for the environment as you don’t need to use multiple plastic bags for your produce plus it will provide a more sturdy and convenient way to carry your fresh goods.

2. Bring Cash

Most purveyors are not going to have a card reader at their produce stand so make sure you bring cash with you.

3. Ask questions:

Don’t be afraid to ask the farmer questions. The exciting thing about going to a farmers’ market is the opportunity to try new things. If you are not sure of what something is, “don’t be afraid to ask questions. They are definitely going to want to tell you all about what they’re selling and what they’re growing,” said Hackett.

4. Have fun!Felicia Hackett

A day at the farmers’ market is a day to explore!

Where to start:

“Once you find a good produce stand, then take a look and scope it out,” said Hackett. “If you have staples on your grocery list then pick those out first.”

Step 1:

Pick out your staples on your grocery list: peppers, potatoes, onions…

Step 2:

Discover something new!

Step 3:

Take all of your fresh produce home, store it, cut it up, prep it, and meal-plan it for the week. Try those new foods by using it as a side or  a dessert. Whichever that new food is, dive in, look for a new recipe on the internet and enjoy!

“The interesting thing about coming to a farmers’ market is that you can really get to know the farmer and where the food is coming from,”said Hackett. “All that information makes eating so much better.”
