This month, and every month in 2018, I am going to highlight a food that was new to me and perhaps will be new to you!


Make trying something new in food and nutrition a goal in 2018. We live in a time where foods from all over the world are accessible to us in local grocery stores. This can go beyond types of foods and include cuisines as well. If you have never ventured into an Ethiopian or Thai restaurant, 2018 might be the year to step out of your food comfort zone!


Let’s talk persimmons! I tried my first persimmon this winter season when I was browsing through the Savannah Farmer’s Market. First of all, get out and go to your local farmer’s market! You are going to see foods that are in season and local. Furthermore, the vendor can give you all sorts of information on knowing when the produce is ripe and how to use it.


Persimmons are in season from October to February. The most popular varietal in the grocery store is a Fuyu Persimmon. They look like an orange tomato! The taste is sweet but mild and they have a slightly crispy texture, like a firm pear. You know the fruit is ripe when it has a deep orange color. They can ripen after they have been picked. so place them in a brown paper bag for a few days then voila they are ready to go.


Persimmons are great in green salads, fruit salads, or eaten alone. The fruit can be eaten in its entirety, minus the stem. No need to worry about seeds! At the farmer’s market, the vendor used the persimmons to make a spicy persimmon compote. Yum!


Next time you are browsing the produce section or heading to the farmer’s market keep an eye out for Persimmons! They will add a little something special and new to your dish!
